Computer Simulations Shed Light on the Physics of Rainbows (UCSD)
Computer scientists at UC San Diego, who set out to simulate all rainbows
found in nature, wound up answering questions about the physics of rainbows
as well. The scientists recreated a wide variety of rainbows - primary
rainbows, secondary rainbows, redbows that form at sunset and cloudbows that
form on foggy days - by using an improved method for simulating how light
interacts with water drops of various shapes and sizes. Their new approach
even yielded realistic simulations of difficult-to-replicate "twinned"
rainbows that split their primary bow in two.

The Deeper Wound $11.99 The author of How to Know God provides help for healing deep trauma—whenever it arises—so we may find peace in ourselves and in our world. Terror came from the sky, and afterward the world would never be the same. September, 11, 2001, defined tragedy for a generation. On that day Deepak Chopra found himself driving from city to city, meeting thousands of people who begged for meaning and solace in the face of suffering. In response he has written The Deeper Wound , offering a way of healing as a memorial to the thousands of victims who perished. The opening section, “In the Face of Tragedy,” defines suffering as the pain that threatens to make life meaningless. When our deepest needs go unfulfilled, suffering begins. We begin to heal when we go beyond personal anger and fear to a realization of our true self, the self that was never afraid and can never be wounded. The true self contains the light that no darkness can attack. Having described a path of awareness and compassion that leads to the light, the second half of The Deeper Wound takes us there through “A Hundred Days of Healing,” daily affirmations, exercises, insights, lessons, and questions—each a step out of pain toward a higher reality. “We can become living memorials to tragedy by restoring the power of life,” writes Deepak Chopra. “You are that life, you are that power. Let us see if we can find the spark that will make the spiritual flame spring up.” Healing yourself comes in two stages—first releasing the energy of suffering, then replacing it with the soul’s energy. It is a gentle and fragile path, very much like holding on to a thread as it leads you from step to step. If you take the time to listen to the voice of silence, you will be astonished at the power you have at your command, however long that power has been overlooked. A portion of the proceeds earned by the author and publisher from the sale of this book will be donated to the Red Cross to aid in humanitarian relief efforts around the world. From the Hardcover edition. |

The Curse of Eve, the Wound of the Hero: Blood, Gender, and Medieval Literature $45.75 "In examining the relationship between blood and gender persuasively, McCracken offers a compelling and original interpretation. The book not only offers a new examination of an important theme in medieval literature, it makes a significant contribution to our understanding of gender in medieval texts."--Simon Gaunt, King's College, London "Succeeds commendably as a feat of scholarship and careful presentation of often highly theoretical ideas."--"Medieval Review" "This interesting comparative study of the relationship between blood and gender in medieval literature considers how blood is associated with cultural values and how those values might be understood in light of blood's ubiquity as a metaphor and literal agent. . . . . Recommended."--"Choice" In "The Curse of Eve, the Wound of the Hero," Peggy McCracken explores the role of blood symbolism in establishing and maintaining the sex-gender systems of medieval culture. Reading a variety of literary texts in relation to historical, medical, and religious discourses about blood, and in the context of anthropological and religious studies, McCracken offers a provocative examination of the ways gendered cultural values were mapped onto blood in the Middle Ages. As McCracken demonstrates, blood is gendered when that of men is prized in stories about battle and that of women is excluded from the public arena in which social and political hierarchies are contested and defined through chivalric contest. In her examination of the conceptualization of familial relationships, she uncovers the privileges that are grounded in gendered definitions of blood relationships. She shows that in narratives about sacrifice a father's relationship to hisson is described as a shared blood, whereas texts about women accused of giving birth to monstrous children define the mother's contribution to conception in terms of corrupted, often menstrual blood. Turning to fictional representations of bloody martyrdom and of eucharistic ritual, McCracken juxtaposes the blood of the wounded guardian of the grail with that of Christ and suggests that the blood from the grail king's wound is characterized in opposition to that of women and Jewish men. Drawing on a range of French and other literary texts, McCracken shows how the dominant ideas about blood in medieval culture point to ways of seeing modern values associated with blood in a new light, and how modern representations in turn suggest new perspectives on medieval perceptions. Peggy McCracken is Associate Professor of French and Women's Studies, University of Michigan. She is author of "The Romance of Adultery: Queenship and Sexual Transgression in Old French Literature," also available from the University of Pennsylvania Press. |

Wound Licking $42.97 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Wound licking is an instinctive response in humans and many other animals to an injury. Dogs, cats, rodents and primates all lick wounds. There is a common folk belief that animal saliva, especially that of dogs, has healing properties for human wounds, and there are a number of legends surrounding the healing properties of human and animal saliva. Wound licking can clean wounds and accelerate healing, so it can be thought of as a form of animal self-medication (zoopharmacognosy). |

Jacob's Wound $16.95 This highly acclaimed work reflects on the nature that we, and our religions, sprang from. The biblical story of Jacob, the patriarch of the Judeo-Christian tradition wrestling with a spirit, has been interpreted in a multitude of ways, but never more persuasively than by Trevor Herriot in Jacob's Wound. The central idea is that Jacob, representing the farmer and civilized man, suffers a deep wound when he swindles the birthright of Esau, representing the hunter and primitive man. Herriot queries whether we, as Jacob did with Esau, can eventually reconcile with the wilderness that we have conquered and have been estranged from for so long. Jacob's Wound takes readers on an untrodden path through history, nature, science, and theology, sharing stories and personal experiences that beautifully illuminate what we once were and what we have become. |
